Red River

Located on the shores of Lake Austin, the new home was designed for an active family of four.

The owners had a desire for a variety of gathering spaces indoor and outdoor that utilized the natural setting of the water-front while maintaining privacy from the busy lake traffic. The linear floor plan allows for light and lake breezes to enter on two sides of each room as well as provides views to the lake on one side and the bluff of Mount Bonnell on the other. The owner’s suite and the family room form wings on either end of the home and begin to define a lakefront courtyard. From these spaces the view is directed up and down the lake instead of across. They also give privacy and attenuate the noise level of lake traffic.

The front entry courtyard is a counterpoint to the more public lake side of the house. Here the visitor is greeted by a staccato series of stone walls that defines a quiet entry garden. The windows were custom-designed to capture daylight and views protected by long cedar overhangs for shade. Streamlined, modern lighting was chosen to accent the more rustic nature of the spaces and finishes.
